What is Spinal Flow® Technique?
The Spinal Flow® Technique was developed by Dr. Carli Axford with over 20 years of research, observation and clinical success. It is rooted in chiropractic principles, Network Spinal Care, and craniosacral work.
Spinal Flow is a gentle healing modality that works directly with the nervous system—the communication center of the body. This system carries your innate intelligence, the life force you were born with, which allows your body to adapt, self-regulate, and heal.
Over time, physical injuries, emotional experiences, and chemical stressors can create tension and blockages within the nervous system. These blockages interrupt communication between the brain and body, often showing up as pain, discomfort, fatigue, emotional overwhelm, or a sense of being stuck.
Spinal Flow helps identify and gently release these areas of stored stress, allowing the nervous system to reconnect, reorganize, and restore its natural rhythm.

The Seven Gateways of the Spine
Each gateway represents an important area of the spine connected to physical, emotional, and chemical balance. When blocked, these gateways may contribute to pain, stress, or emotional holding.
Base Gateway –
Your foundation, grounding, and sense of safety
Foundation Gateway –
Movement, creativity, and reproduction
Power Gateway –
Digestion, metabolism, and personal power
Center Gateway –
Heart space, emotions, and connection
Passion Gateway –
Communication and self-expression
Pause Gateway –
Mind-body connection and inner calm
Awaken Gateway –
Full spinal alignment and higher awareness
As these gateways begin to open, the body naturally shifts toward greater balance, clarity, and ease.
Spinal Flow works by amplifying what is already right within your body—your innate ability to self-regulate, adapt, and heal. Rather than forcing change, this gentle technique invites your nervous system to shift out of survival mode and into a state of safety, connection, and restoration.
Here’s how that transformation unfolds:
Your body is constantly communicating—through posture, breath, tension, and movement. As a Spinal Flow practitioner, I assess holistically, listening to how your nervous system is responding to life. Areas of restriction or holding often reflect unresolved physical injuries, emotional experiences, or chemical stressors.
These areas are not “problems,” but signals showing us where your nervous system is working hard to protect you. By recognizing these patterns, we create space for the body to reorganize itself with greater ease.
Spinal Flow uses light, precise contacts at 33 specific access points along the sacrum, spine, and cranium. These areas are where the dura mater—the protective layer surrounding the brain and spinal cord—anchors to the skeletal system.
Through gentle touch (never forceful), these access points act as gateways to the central nervous system. This communication helps soften long-held tension, awaken dormant pathways, and remind the nervous system that it is safe to let go. Many clients describe this as feeling “lighter,” more open, or deeply calm during sessions.
As these access points are activated, the nervous system may initiate a natural, wave-like movement along the spine known as Spinal Flow. This is guided by the Central Pattern Generator (CPG)—an intrinsic neural circuit responsible for rhythmic movement and coordination.
This flowing motion is both electrophysiological and mechanical, meaning it supports communication between the brain and body while gently mobilizing the spine. As coherence builds from the sacrum to the cranium, the nervous system begins to reorganize itself—reducing stored stress and creating the internal conditions needed for healing, adaptability, and resilience.
This is not something you “make” happen—the body chooses when and how to express it.
With continued sessions, your nervous system begins to entrain to this new rhythm of ease. Old defense patterns—like chronic tension, shallow breathing, or constant alertness—start to unwind naturally.
Over time, many people notice:
Improved posture and movement
Greater emotional resilience
Reduced reactivity and stress
A deeper sense of grounding and presence
Feeling more “at home” in their body
Healing becomes less about fixing and more about allowing the nervous system to remember its natural state of balance.
• Helps release stored stress from injuries, trauma, and chronic tension
• Supports healthier communication between the brain and body
• Encourages balance between stress and relaxation responses
• Promotes stability, clarity, and nervous system resilience
• Empowers the body to heal without force or manipulation
Healing happens when the body feels safe. Spinal Flow creates that safety.
